Scripture text: Matthew 26:57-68, 27:1-2 Preacher: Rev. David Sutherland Date: 12 March 2017
This sermon was preached on the occasion of the congregation’s Spring Communion, and was delivered in three parts which are here combined to form a single address.
The text describes the unjust and irregular trial of Jesus conducted by the Sanhedrin, and records how Caiaphas was prompted to put to Jesus the most important question ever asked. The sermon considers the response that Jesus gave, and goes on to find in the words of v.58 “But Peter followed him at a distance” scriptural guidance on who is welcome at the Lord’s Table. The address closes with advice on what our intentions should be as we leave Communion.
The following Psalms were sung in the course of this service: Psalm 118:12-17; Psalm 116:8-13; Psalm 36:5-8; Psalm 72:14-16
