Scripture text: Luke 23: 13-25 Preacher: Rev. David Sutherland Date: 8 May 2016
This is the third of a series of three sermons preached on the occasion of the Congregation’s Spring Communion season.
Jesus, his innocence confirmed, is sent back by Herod to Pilate. But with the Jewish leaders persisting in their clamour for Jesus’s death, Pilate reluctantly agrees to release in his place the man who is indisputably guilty of the very crime of which Jesus is wrongly accused. The sermon explores the nature of the substitution of Christ, the righteous, for the guilty sinner, and closes with the thought that Christians are called to serve as Christ’s substitutes on earth in the unjust world in which we live now.
