Scripture text: Ephesians 3: 14-21 Preacher: Rev David Sutherland Date: 18 January 2015
Our continuing journey through Paul’s Letter to the Ephesians brings us today to Chapter 3, verses 14-21. Following Paul’s description in Chapter 2 of how the Ephesian Christians (and all unbelievers) had once been dead in sin, and how they had since become alive in Christ by God’s grace, and following a short parenthesis in Chapter 3 verses 2-13 concerning the mystery of Christ and the church, he (Paul) comes in verse 14 to his prayer for all the saints.
This sermon explores that prayer (verses 14-21) in easily understood terms, using as its central theme Paul’s petition that his readers might know the love of Christ. The nature of Christ’s love for the church is discussed, as is the importance of our knowing that love. The role of both the Holy Spirit and of fellow-believers in gaining that knowledge is explained and the sermon closes with practical advice on how we might grow to know that love better.
