Scripture text: Matthew 27:39-50                Preacher: Rev. David Sutherland                 Date: 10 May 2015

Today’s sermon was given in the course of the congregation’s Communion service, and was delivered in the form of three linked addresses as the congregation approached the Lord’s Table. Here it is amalgamated into a single sermon.

The first part reflects on the character of Jesus’ death, that it was simultaneously necessary, substitutionary and voluntary. The second part considers the understanding we now have of Jesus’ actions and words on the cross, which was not given to those who were present at the crucifixion. The focus finally switches to the actions, motivated by love for Jesus, of just one of the many by-standers at the crucifixion, and prompts each of us to consider how our love for Jesus might motivate us.
