Scripture text: Acts 1:12-26 Preacher: Rev. David Sutherland Date: 15 May 2016
This sermon was delivered to the Congregation immediately before they met for the purpose of electing new Elders.
It examines the precept of election to church office and discusses who should be deemed eligible. The purpose of electing leaders is considered and also the process to be used. The change in the method of deciding the election is explained, from casting lots as described in today’s Scripture text to the current practice of secret ballot. And finally attention is drawn to the significance of the prayer recorded in v.24 of the text, and of the final outcome recorded by Luke.
