Scripture texts: Romans 13: 1-7; Matthew 5: 38-48; Proverbs 6: 12-19
Preacher: Rev. David Sutherland Date: 12 October 2014 (Evening)
Whether or not Scripture teaches that Christians should be pacifists is a question which has exercised the church throughout its history. Augustine, followed later by Thomas Aquinas, formed one view, whilst others, from Tertullian to Robert Barclay argued the opposite. The church has never succeeded in forming an absolute consensus on the matter.
In this sermon the three main contemporary positions on the question are examined, namely Total Pacifism, the Just War, and Nuclear Pacifism. Finally, a suggested answer to the question is put forward.
